The motivation of clients and clinicians, derived from internal and external factors, shape their attitudes towards healthcare (Micu, Gardan & Gardan, 2015). Studies suggest low staff motivation leads to lower patient safety standards, reduced patient satisfaction and a lower quality of health services provided (Micu et al., 2015). As future occupational therapists, fostering motivation in a client-centred approach is imperative (Elwyn et al., 2014). This can be demonstrated by collaborating with clients to set SMART goals, which will encourage their self-motivation, enhance their autonomy and allow them to be accountable for their health (Elwyn et al., 2014).
