Being able to conduct thorough interviews using key communication skills will nurture the therapeutic relationship necessary for effective care (Doherty & Thompson, 2014). Building these relationships allows clinicians to work cohesively with clients (Richardson, 2009), fosters a person-centered approach (Doherty & Thompson, 2014), and empowers clients (Moreno-Poyato, et al., 2016). The traits that foster this include being authentic, respectful and approachable (Moreno-Poyato et al., 2016), which ensure the client feels valued, listened to and their perspective considered (Yeung, Wong & Macarthur, 2015). In my practice, I will utilise appropriate questioning techniques, listen attentively, and create open and respectful environments where my client feels comfortable.
